Growing up in the middle of New York City, animal science is the last career that I imagine myself ending up in

Nonetheless, as I grew up, I found myself becoming more and more interested in animals and the natural world. When people think about global warming and changing environmental conditions, they usually think about plants. Animals, however, are every bit as important an issue. They spread diseases, they are part of our food supply, and most importantly they are part of the web of life that sustains the whole planet. Animal science is not a matter of just working as a veterinarian, or helping farmers raise livestock. There are careers in animal science that spread the globe and involves some very interesting environmental work.

I started off my career in something a little bit more practical than that. Originally, I was in animal reproduction science. This is also known as animal husbandry. Basically, it is the field of animal science that deals with livestock. In that career, you get to make decisions about buying and selling animals. Not only can you help make wise decisions about animals for sale, but you can also handle every aspect of feeding, caring for, and ultimately consuming livestock.

It wasn’t a bad career, but after a while it wasn’t enough. After all, I didn’t want to spend my life pushing buttons and filling our charts. If I was going to go into something as earthy of animal science, I figured I should make a difference. That is why I got involved with a nonprofit organization.

Basically, we ran a nonprofit animal wildlife Center. We would use it to teach kids about the local ecosystem, and about broader environmental issues in the world as a whole. I know that I’m not going to change the world myself, but I feel like I am making a small difference in the community through the work I do. Every year, teachers lead volunteer classes from the local school on field trips to our center. Through this work, we help educate the next generation to be stewards of the land. It is nice to be able to feel good about what I do for a living.

Breast Augmentation – Not A New Idea

Breast augmentation isnt new. Its not even a twentieth century idea. Women have been trying to improve on nature for centuries. It was only a matter of time before women turned to science and medicine for aid.

In 1889, paraffin injections were tried. The results of this were disastrous. 1895 is the earliest known use of implants. The first one was done by the German surgeon, Vincenz Czerny. He used the adipose tissue (the fatty tissue) from the womans back. This benign growth or a lipoma, seemed appropriate because theyre comprised of fatty tissues, soft to the touch and moveable.

Between 1895 and the early to mid-1900s many other substances were tried. Glass balls, ox cartilage, ivory, Terylene wood, polyethylene chips, ground rubber, polyester, Silastic rubber and Teflon-silicone prostheses were some of the choices.

In 1945 and 1950 attempts were made to rotate the womans chest wall tissue into the breast to add volume. Different synthetics were used during the 1950s and 1960s. An estimated 50,000 women received injections of silicone. In some of these women, hardening of the breasts and development of silicone granulomas (small nodules) were so severe, mastectomies were needed for treatment. 30 years after these treatments, women are still seeking medical services from complications resulting from these injections.

Todays implants are much safer and the instances of complications have been greatly reduced. Hopefully, medical science will be able to keep up with womens attempts to improve on their natural gifts.

Fatal Familial Insomnia

Fatal Familial Insomnia

This is probably by far one of the rarest forms of sleeping disorders around. This is an inherited disorder that has only been found in 28 families in the world that have the dominant gene for it. The offspring of a parent(s) of developing the disorder is about 50% and there is no cure for this. The age of onset is around the ages between 30 and 60 and the disorder’s time frame runs between 7 to 18 months. This disease has 4 stages that it goes through and 1st stage of the disease starts off with the sufferer dealing with increased insomnia leading to severe panic attacks, and various kinds of phobias, this stage lasts about 4 months, 2nd stage sufferer deals with hallucinations and panic attacks become more obvious and lasts about 5 months, 3rd stage Complete and total inability to sleep. And follows with drastic weight loss and lasts about 3 months, 4th stage Dementia sets in and progressively becoming irresponsive and mute over a course of 6 months and this is the final progression of the disease.

This sounds a lot like Alzheimer’s because if you notice the time frame it’s a lot less shorter than the actual time span of someone who deals with Alzheimer’s because the sufferer is dealing with it for several years instead of a year where the disease progressively degenerates the mental capacity to such a degree that the sufferer has a hard time with memory.

As far as treatment is concerned sleeping pills don’t have any effect for people suffering from Fatal Familial Insomnia and not even non-medicinal therapy doesn’t work either. Medical science has no idea why it’s a fatal disease and how they can create effective treatment options to combat this problem. And more effective genetic testing for diseases that are inherited to find out what can be done medicinally and therapeutically to deal with this sleeping disorder.

It’s a matter of how much attention the medical world takes note of this and pushes the funding to finding a cure and effective genetic testing of families and tracking diseases through the generations to be able to have some kind of record of the disease passing down through generations or skipping generations which is what some diseases have done in some families for those who have a disposition for certain things.

This doesn’t get nearly as much attention as all the other sleeping disorders because of it being rare, and only turning up in so many people and births making it not rare enough for it to get the recognition as regular insomnia and to qualify for the treatments. That are currently out there to help those 60 million people who are dealing with some kind of sleeping disorder(s).

With the way medical science is going it will be a matter of time before medical science catches up and helps the many people who are looking for a cure of being deprived of a restful night’s sleep. The moment a cure is found is one more person who will be helped to have a good night’s rest.

Educational Levels of St. Maarten

Educational Levels of St. Maarten

Summary: Hardly anyone can dispute the educational level of St. Maarten especially schools like the American University of the Caribbean and the University of St Martin.

Hardly anyone can dispute the recent surging of the educational levels of the population in St. Maarten especially in the presence of St. Maarten medical school American University of the Caribbean (AUC) and the University of St Martin (USM).

The St. Maarten medical school of AUC was originally located in Montserrat on the British West Indies. But when volcanic eruptions occurred nearly a decade ago (around 1995) in Montserrat, the St. Maarten medical school of AUC shifted its medical science campus to St. Maarten, thus enhancing the educational levels of the residents of the island. The relocation project was a huge effort, totaling an overall amount of several millions of dollars due to state of the art medical facilities. Plus, there had been several choice architectural designs implemented that would suggest enhance learning on its students as well as encourage the Caribbean students to enroll.

As such, the St. Maarten medical school of AUC has a three story atrium along with a courtyard and beautiful landscaping that would speak of the prominence of the place. And to promote fine environmental aspects, air conditionings have been set within its buildings and shaded areas provide for those external structures. And to facilitate more on the learning of its students, the St. Maarten medical school of AUC provides contemporary lecture halls, classrooms and labs more than adequate technology to handle teachings: audiovisual technology, a fully equipped biological science and anatomical dissection laboratories, clinical patient examination rooms, and a comprehensive general library with computers.

The University of St Martin is the choice fore those students seeking professions outside of medicine. With over 15 years of teaching experience, the University of St Martin now offers a wide variety of degrees, non degrees, and even secondary educations programs. But even though The University of St Martin caters to students from the neighboring islands, it still upholds the solid ruling of holding small classes. That is to offer each student personalized teaching and tutoring.

The residents and the community groups are also factors for raising the level of education in St. Maarten. In fact, a certain group of residents have proposed some steps to enhance several factors of the society excluding tourism, which hardly needs enhancing at the moment. The group, St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association (SHTA) is represented by individuals and private business eager for a reformation to other community aspects of St. Maarten, particularly the environment, safety and security, education and infrastructure.

Tips for a Successful Career in Sports Medicine

Tips for a Successful Career in Sports Medicine

People are always looking for ways in which they can have a highly successful career and there are things that you can do to really increase the chances of being successful.
However, if you simply overlook some tips you can still have a fulfilling career while other tips are quite necessary in order to succeed. Working towards a successful career often begins long before you actually start the career, and sports medicine is certainly no exception.

One of the first considerations that you should look into is ensuring if you are still in school that you are studying enough science to satisfy the needs of sports medicine. If you are someone, who hates biology class, and tries to figure out ways to avoid other science classes then sports medicine may not be the best idea for you. While sports medicine is not always about treating patients, it is still considered a medical field and someone who dislikes science is not likely to find happiness in the field. However, if you really do want to find a career in sports medicine you need to look into taking as many biology, anatomy and physics classes as your school possibly offers.

If you are not in school currently, look for a school that will offer excellent programs in the science fields that are required. If you have already completed your schooling, look and see if your classes that you studied will fulfill the science needs for getting started. If it does not, then it is best to start looking for a school that can satisfy your needs.

Another thing that you should closely look into is selecting the medical school you want to attend. Not all schools are created equally. Students who attend the best schools tend to get a higher quality education and are able to translate that higher education into better careers ultimately. You may have to compare prices of schools to find one you can actually afford, but attending the best school you can possibly afford will certainly pay off in the long run.

While you are looking for the perfect school to attend, consider which area of sports medicine you are interested in specializing in. Most doctors simply cannot attend to all of the medical needs of athletes; there are far too many specialties to even try so it is best that you look for a school that is excellent in your desired specialty. For example, a school that is highly regarded for their training of traditional medical doctors may not be as useful to you if you are looking into a career in orthopedics or even surgery. Ensure you are training for the correct field that you are really interested in.

Look for a residency program that is based in the exact specialty of sports medicine that you are interested in as soon as possible. While all doctors must do basic residency programs, many move on immediately from the residency program into sports medicine. This is not recommended at all, due to the complex nature of the body and the strains as well as considerations when sports are involved it is best to participate in a sports medicine residency program as well before fully starting in the field. This will allow you to maximize your hands on training and get the absolute most possible from all of your education. A career in medicine is certainly not cheap, so do your best to ensure you are putting that education to maximum usage.

Additionally, networking can be your best friend, especially for those who are beginning. Whether you offer your services to a semi professional team, or only to the little league team down the road it gives you the opportunity to help people learn who you are, and what you are capable of doing. You simply cannot purchase advertising that is as good for your practice. So volunteer some of your time monitoring games and helping ensure that athletes are taken care of; people will recognize your efforts and are much more likely to use you when they need a sports medicine doctor.

Medical Alarm Systems (2)

Medical Alarm Systems

Summary: Medical alarm systems are easy to operate lifesavers equipped with a panic button and provide a direct link to trained medical personnel or a family member.

Why does when anybody need an emergency, help is always just around the corner yet seldom would it arrive on time. Such cases are rare, miraculous notification by patients that creates very timely rescues that watching the drama unfold could make the hairs on you neck stand stiff. Nonetheless, science knows this and came up with a definitive (but not without flaws) answer. So stop glancing up the sky, wondering for the second time if miracles still happen. Once again science had lent a hand to raise the percentage of miracle rescue up a bit.

Living independently is not a moot issue, but as living alone there is always the risk of a medical emergency occurring and no one will be near to dispatch help. To counter this issue, medical alarm systems came to the manufacturers’ attention. These medical alarm systems are easy to reach and operate with a panic button that provides a direct link to trained medical personnel.

Some medical alarm systems offers a bit more, just like ResponseLink. ResponseLink is one of those personal emergency response team that provides 24/7 emergency monitoring, personalized voice response by trained professionals if the patient is still coherent, notification of the designated emergency contacts, communication to the dispatched emergency response personnel, daily medication monitoring, daily check-in and wellness verification, medication compliance monitoring, daily health reminders and verification monitoring like blood pressure and insulin, wake-up call / check-in, and monitored smoke detection. This medical alarm system is more directed to the elderly clientele.

The 24 hour service of ResponseLink is available for $34.95 per month which includes the two way voice equipment. There is a one-time enrollment fee of $50.00. You simply return the equipment when you no longer have a need for it. If you are interested to seek their services, contact them at 800-894-1428 or you could log on their website: www.responselink.com

Are there medical alarm systems that don’t have the annoying monthly fees? Monitoring fees may be very convenient but it leeches away too much money. There is this medical alarm system that dials for emergency help when you can’t. The Panic Button & Medical Alarm Auto Dialer gives you and your loved ones peace of mind by automatically dialing up to 9 phone numbers you pre-select at the press of the “panic” button. Once the Emergency Medical Alarm Auto Dialer dials a number, it plays a maximum of 40-second recorded message before going on the next list, ensuring all the pre-selected numbers are notified. The emergency auto dialer features a 2-way communication capability if the stricken patient is still coherent.

So how much do these nifty medical alarm systems cost? It’s only $240 at www.safetyandsecuritycenter.com

Arizona Schools Benefit Form Science Foundation Grant

Arizona Schools Benefit Form Science Foundation Grant

DES Symposium - Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Boston

In April 2007 the Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz) announced an investment of $3.2 million into a K-12 Student & Teacher Discovery Program that will benefit the Arizona Schools. The Arizona Schools grants are the third awarding of SFAz funds intended to create a top-notch science, engineering and medical core in Arizona. The foundation intends to create this by supporting and funding secondary and university level Arizona Schools.

Why Fund Science in Arizona Schools?

Science Foundation Arizona is a non-profit organization created in 2006 to “strengthen scientific, engineering and medical research programs and infrastructure in areas of greatest strategic value to Arizona’s competitiveness in the global economy.” In addition to benefits to economy, educators in Arizona Schools are aware of a growing achievement gap that most affects minorities and low-income students. That gap is greatest in areas of math and science.

Arizona Schools are an oxymoron in education. Education Week rated them last in the nation for per pupil spending in January of 2007. Yet it rated Arizona Schools 14th in the nation on academic standards, and 20th in education alignment. On the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) the state came in 21st. Typically schools with lowest spending per pupil (like California) also rate poorly on other indicators of success; while the top spending states (like New Jersey) rank higher.

Superintendent of Arizona Schools, Tom Horne, wrote in his January 2007 district letter that although the national average is not a satisfactory goal, “… if our [Arizona] schools can bring our students to above the national average, even though we are last in resources, I believe we could be in the top 10 nationally if we raised our resources to the national average.” Clearly private funding from groups like SFAz is expected to help Arizona Schools reach that goal.

What Programs Will Benefit Arizona Schools?

Arizona Schools intend to use some of the funds for summer classes, teacher training and online courses. $225,000 will go to growing the Hands-on Optics Project run by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson. This program lets elementary and middle school students in rural Arizona Schools learn about optics from scientists in surrounding communities.

The For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) award gives $525,000 to the development of underprivileged K-12 students. Arizona Schools will participate in the First Robotics Competition and FIRST LEGO® League Programs with these funds.

As Arizona Schools try to address issues like English Language Learner program funding, and equity across racial and socio-economic lines, debates over allocation funds will continue to heat up. This is why a national trend of philanthropic and corporate sponsorship of public schools has become so popular.

Whether Superintendent Horne will get the additional state funding he seeks for Arizona Schools is still unknown. But it’s certain that the funds provided by SFAz will benefit the Arizona Schools in the 2007-2008 school year and beyond.

The History Of Spirituality’s Role In Health Care

The History Of Spirituality’s Role In Health Care

Medicine and health care in most traditions started out with healers who used spirituality as the way of curing medical conditions. These traditions, however, were taken into the backseat during the era of scientific medical revolution. In the next years following the revolution of science and medicine and with the newest innovations and scientific researches in medical technology, there is little view of how spirituality can play a great role in health care.
In the early 1400s, Greek philosophers and healers had a holistic view of medicine. This meant that a person can only be cured of his illness if his mind, body and spirit are all in good health. This kind of belief was widespread throughout the 15th century. The same belief was prevalent all over Europe and Christianity at that period also employed the idea of spirituality as a part of the healing process. However, between the 1400s and the start of the 1600, the establishment of the Catholic Church became more strengthened. During this period, medical discoveries were also beginning to resurface. But since the Church had opposing views with the sciences, the medical world was split into two beliefs and thus, science and spirituality were never combined in early medicine. Because it was believed that spirituality can never become a part of healing and health care, it was also during this period when witch trials became more pervasive, and even midwives who assisted women during their childbirth were accused of witchcraft and burned at the stakes.
During the 17th century, another concept was introduced to the world- dualism. Thus, spirituality was recognized as a tool for healing. However, the boundaries of spirituality as a medium of healing was only limited and focused towards the restoration of the mind and the spirit. Physical health care and treatment were still under the monopoly of science and medicine. It continued within the end of the 19th century when Churches still consider autopsy as blasphemy and at the same time, medical innovations and discoveries were all concentrated towards the scientific aspect of health care, leaving spirituality as a subject that should be tackled by the Church alone.
It was only during the 1950s when Albert Einstein, along with other great minds, formulated the theory of relativity and the concept that all matters and space actually possess an interrelation with each other. With these ideas, noetic science was born. In this area of medicine, it is suggested that a person’s spiritual and religious beliefs as well as his spiritual history can influence and affect the physical aspects of his life. Because of the introduction of this new area of medical science which explores the inner experiences of a person rather than merely his physical attributes, it paved way to medical researches which showed how spirituality can pose a great effect in a person’s health.
Today, the reunion of spirituality and health care is still under constant tension and discussions. It cannot, however, disprove the fact that spirituality plays a crucial role in improving a person’s well-being, not only in the emotional and mental facets, but in the physical aspects as well.
Spirituality in health care today is considered as one of the most traditional and ancient practices, although employing spirituality in medicine has faded during the boom of scientific innovations. Because of its efficacy in improving some health conditions, spirituality in health care is now being introduced yet again in the medical practice.
Spirituality in Mental Health Care
Spirituality and faith can play a crucial role when it comes to dealing with a person’s emotional and mental health. When a person is under a mental or emotional struggle, the only area that he can find solace in is his faith. When it comes to dealing with mental health, medical research has found that spirituality can affect a person in coping with his illness. Another study showed that patients who have stronger connection in their religious beliefs have higher possibility to recover from their disorders. Additionally, keeping a strong spirituality can instill optimism and positive energy even when a person is being treated with health complication. These two effects of spirituality serve as key factors in reducing the depression that a person can experience when he is ill.
Spirituality in Physical Health Care
Traditional Western medicine often deems spirituality and physical health as two aspects that might not complement each other. However, there are certain studies that also showed how faith can actually help while a patient is being treated from a certain disease. One study which was conducted among elderly and more mature patients showed that patients who exhibit stronger connections with their spiritual and religious life are less prone to experience depression and they have a lower rate of deterioration in their physical health. Additionally, they have healthier immune systems and lower blood pressure.
A supplemental research also showed that religious and spiritual patients who underwent open-heart surgeries had higher chance of survival than patients who had no connections with spiritual groups. Patients with strong spiritual lives who are diagnosed with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, and heart diseases also cope better and have higher chances of recuperation. In programs for alcoholic rehabilitations such as Alcoholics Anonymous, experts observed that spirituality can play a huge part in educating the patients that they can avoid substance and alcohol abuse if they turn to prayer and meditation instead.
The reason for these might be that spirituality teaches how to maintain strong faith, nurture relationships and help patients in focusing their energy to more worthwhile activities such as meditation, prayer, conversing with positive people and doing volunteer work. These activities prevent them from focusing on their health problems and eliminate looming possibilities of anxiety and depression

Medical Billing Software

Medical Billing Software

Though a relatively new concept, medical billing software actually goes back to the time of World War II when the explosion of scientific knowledge brought increasingly sophisticated and complex diagnostic treatment procedures to the science of medicine.

At first, medical billing software technology was at most, primitive. Today, however, with recent advancements in both science and technology, medical billing software has also gained much improvement, making it a far-cry from its predecessors.

Another reason why medical billing software has become increasingly popular can be said to be an offshoot of the technological boom of the digital era. The discovery of new technology and methods in medicine quickly led to a dilemma which modern physicians commonly face. Where rural doctors in the past were commonly paid with produce, meat, quilts, or other services, the modern doctors and surgeons of today want to get paid in cash. To get their money, they must submit a claim for professional services to health insurance companies.

Submitting claims for professional services is a tiring and tedious process. It may take a day, it may take forever. Doctors certainly don’t have the time of the day to handle such tiring work. That is why medical billing software always comes in handy just about now.

The help of sophisticated medical billing software programs and micro computers that coding system practices became standardized. The medical billing software helps the medical coding staff in determining and distinguishing the enormous number and various kinds of medical and surgical procedures, complaints, and diagnoses accurately in order to be compensated.

Accuracy. That’s what the profession calls for. And medical billing software technology makes it all the more easier for you.

Medical billing software is designed for medical offices, chiropractors, dentists, and medical billing independent consultants. So whether you are interested in starting your own home-based medical billing service or manage a private practice, medical billing software offers you the flexibility you need. Now, you can easily and accurately send electronic or paper claims from your personal computer right from your home.

There are essentially two ways to submit your claims electronically. That is either through an electronic claims clearinghouse or directly to an insurance carrier. Whichever method you want to try, there’s bound to be a medical billing software program that answers that particular need.

Before you go process your claims through your medical billing software, you will need to go through an enrollment process. This is so that the company you are dealing with can “set up” information about you in their computer system. Medical billing software also helps make enrollment easier for you. Instead of taking six to seven weeks, which is the normal period for the process to finish, medical billing software can reduce it to only a few days.
